I'm Going TO COLLEGE!
McKinley's PTA is setting the foundation with our College Awareness Campaign. The cornerstone of our program is our McKinley Alumni Scholarship, which we hope to keep going so that TODAY'S McKinley student may be the recipients of the future.

McKinley Elementary Kids Aim For College
We want our children to aim high, expect a lot of themselves and realize their potential. We also know that not every child gets the message that they CAN GO TO COLLEGE at home. So in 2006 we began our College Awareness Campaign, posting college pennants in the classrooms and in "College Hall", taking our 5th graders to UCLA for a college tour and celebrating College Day by inviting all students to wear the colors or logos of their favorite college and choose sides in the UCLA vs. USC football rivalry the following day. During the month of November - College Month- we ask students to bring in their spare change for our McKinley Annual Scholarship. McKinley kids are inspired to save money for college themselves and play a part in the amount we are able to offer in our scholarship. In 2007 we started with a $250 donation from our PTA, the kids raised $450 and we added a matching gift from then Burbank Mayor and McKinley Alumna, Marsha Ramos, to offer a $1400 scholarship. Today, our PTA donates $500 to support the Scholarship. Contributions are also made to the Alumni Scholarship from the proceeds of the opportunity drawings from the PTA 2009 Spring and Fall Family Nights. College-bond John Burroughs High School seniors who went to McKinley are encouraged to apply for the scholarship and are asked to write an essay to inspire current McKinley kids to achieve their goals.

Congratulations to Gabriela Orellana, our 2010 McKinley Alumni Scholarship recipient. Gabriella is graduating John Burroughs High School with a 4.4 GPA and heading to CSUN where she plans to study Journalism. This year's scholarship was in the amount of $2,010 which was raised during the College Month coin drive by the students in November, through our fall Family Night opportunity drawings, and generous community donations. Thank you to everyone who helped to make McKinley's Scholarship Fund a great success!
